On the home front: Fascinating photographs reveal what life was like during WWII for those left behind as the Allies battled Hitler's forces

Stunning new photographs which show how British families coped at home during World War II have been revealed in a new book.

Black-and-white images taken at the time of the conflict shows the brutal reality endured by British civilians during and in the run up to the war, with one of the most striking pictures showing how people hid in trenches in the the village of Burnham Norton, Norfolk.

Some of the other images in the book show the moment the German airship Graf Zeppelin flew dangerously over the British coast in 1931 - eight years before World War II had started - and a group of Norwich City Engineers wear gas masks for decontamination in 1939.

More shocking images shows a desperate family making their way to a newly dug-in Anderson Shelter in Newcastle. The picture is in stark contrast to a loving portrait of a wartime couple on their wedding day.
