The commander of the 2nd group of the 52nd Luftwaffe fighter squadron (II.Gruppe / Jagdgeschwader 52), Hauptmann Gerhard Barkhorn (20.05.1919 - 08.01.1983) congratulates the 1000th combat flight at the airfield in the Crimea. G. Barkhorn sits in the cockpit of his fighter Messerschmitt Bf.109G-6. The wreath tied ribbons with the names of countries over the sky which fought the German ace: Denmark, Belgium, the USSR, France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. By the end of the war, Barkhorn had executed 1,104 combat sorties. January 6, 1983 crashed in a car accident near Cologne, died in the hospital two days later.
