Oscar Pistorius sentence appeal to be heard in November

Pretoria - The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein is due to hear arguments in the State’s appeal against Oscar Pistorius’ six-year jail sentence, on November 3.

Pistorius returned to jail for a second time in June last year to start serving his six-year jail term for the Valentines Day 2013 killing of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The State is however set on appealing what they called a shockingly lenient sentence meted out to him by Judge Thokozile Masipa in the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria.

His advocate, Barry Roux, in papers filed with the SCA, said the looming appealing proceedings are hanging like a sword over his head.

Oscar Pistorius’ family is suing a US cable TV channel over its “Blade Runner Killer” film

This is more representative of what actually took place for sure...Trailer: «Oscar Pistorius: Blade Runner Killer»

But Wait! Pistorius 'won't be able to sue over film'
Media Monitoring Africa director William Bird said he was unsure that Pistorius's family had any basis to sue. He said while the movie was upsetting, there was no "reasonable" basis for legal action. "They might try to interdict local cinemas from airing it."

Brendon Ambrose, of the law firm Spoor & Fisher, said Pistorius might base his challenge on his right to privacy as the film was unauthorised. "Defamation of character is an option, but is difficult to prove and is dependent on how Oscar is portrayed in the film.

"Defamation is unlikely to succeed because a defence to defamation is 'truth and in the public interest' which, if the film portrays the story as it actually happened, then defamation as a cause of action likely falls away."

That's that? Now we await supreme court's judgement.

PRETORIA - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it's optimistic the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) will accept its arguments and impose a stiffer sentence on Oscar Pistorius.

Tension in the Pistorius family as they disagree on murder appeal

Cape Town – The family of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius is split in two over whether or not to appeal his murder conviction.

While Pistorius' father Henke wants to push ahead and take the matter further, the Paralympian's siblings don't agree.

Netwerk24 reported that Henke, 64, plans to appeal Pistorius' murder conviction.

He wants to apply to be admitted as amicus curiae (friend of the court) so that he can challenge a Supreme Court of Appeal ruling which changed Pistorius' culpable homicide conviction to murder.

However, Pistorius' brother Carl told News24 that his father’s views did not represent those of Pistorius and his siblings.

"We categorically distance ourselves from any petition or appeal made by Henke in his personal capacity," Carl said.

South Africa’s most senior judges are expected to rule in the coming weeks on an appeal by prosecutors to increase the Paralympian's “shockingly lenient” punishment.

Many legal experts predict Pistorius could face another decade or more behind bars.

If that happens, Pistorius would be forced to abandon the “more relaxed” Atteridgeville Correctional facility he is currently being held in a few miles from his family’s mansion.
